Pierre Fortin

Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist

Song – "Enligne"
- Now playing...

Having learned how to play drums at 14 and guitar at 15, Pierre Fortin started feeling inspired to create a solo album a couple of years ago. As a member of Les Dales Hawerchuk, a drummer for Galaxie, Mara Tremblay, David Marin and Gaëlle, and a guitarist and singer for Les Frères Cheminaud over the last few years, Fortin felt ready to sit down with his guitar and write a series of musically and lyrically intimate pieces.

The resulting opus, Mécanique d’hiver, features Fortin as composer, producer, singer and performer on nearly all the instruments on the album, making it a personal release in more ways than one. Mostly written over the winter months, this straightforward, humble and uncompromising collection of songs deals with a time of the year conducive to solitude and fresh thinking. Fortin’s debut album was recorded in the Moskaï Studio with some help from old musician friends such as Olivier Langevin on arrangements and recording and Benoît Bouchard on recording.

Originally from the central Quebec area of Lac-Saint-Jean, and known for his solid rock and country folk performances, Fortin’s new ambient sound falls somewhere between the folk and the Americana music genres, with a modern electronic touch provided by guest musician Dan Thouin on keyboards. Co-produced by Fortin and Langevin, the album’s slow tempo is somewhat reminiscent of Jeff Beck’s universe, and of meditative East Indian music, while bearing the unmistakable imprint of the Langevin/Fortin sound. Fortin’s lyrics deal mostly with twisted liaisons, and the singer’s soft, comforting and carefree voice help make Mécanique d’hiver an enveloping soundtrack not only for fireside listening, but for all seasons.
