Jean-François Lessard

Song – "Tout se paie" - Now playing...

Jean-François Lessard recorded Utopia, his first album, in 2007 after gaining experience playing club dates in cities as far-flung as Montreal, Paris, Berlin, Beijing, Granada and Cuzco (Peru); music festivals in Quebec, France and Italy; and even demonstrations and social forums. Often compared to singers Richard Desjardins and Jacques Brel, this singer-songwriter’s new songs are now more mature and sparsely arranged, compared to his fiery, zany and amazingly sensitive onstage sing-and-tell style. The new album is released Sept. 1, 2010.

Applying the philosophy behind his new album’s title song, “Tout se paie” (“Everything Comes with a Price”), Lessard is selling the song online as a case in point. The fact that everything has a price has been driven into the psyche of this slightly disillusioned thirty-something artist by the necessity to trade one’s personal idealism for the world’s materialistic reality. In spite of it all, the song’s message is that you can still live off love and water alone – providing you pay your bills! On a jazz piano, fast banjo and languorous bass, this thoughtful song paints a vivid picture of a life-journey in the shape of an emotional rollercoaster, finally leading to peace and serenity. This is Lessard at his best – straight talk and strong music.

Performed with musicians Alexis Dumais (piano), Marton Maderspach (percussions), Yannick Malo (banjo) and Blanche Baillargeon (bass), “Tout se paie” is a taste of the album, where more of Lessard’s signature raw sonority and live stage ambiance are sure to be delivered. Besides his career as a singer-songwriter, Lessard is also the founding artistic director of Le Rancard, a new festival featuring chansons à texte (great song lyrics), poetry slams and storytellers that will be held for the first time Aug. 28, 2010, in St-Denis-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and in about 10 other cities throughout 2011.
