Florence K

Song – "La lune et la neige" - Now playing...

Warmth, refinement, maturity, emotion – four words that encapsulate Florence K’s promising career. The daughter of singer-songwriter Hany Khoriaty and soprano Natalie Choquette, Florence undertook her first tours as a backup singer. Following her early training as a classical singer, she became interested in languages, a passion that's reflected in the French, Spanish and Italian songs that she performs on all her recordings. She taught herself piano by performing four nights a week at the Stash Café Bazaar in Old Montreal, where she developed a precocious mastery of bossa nova, blues, jazz and pop styles.

Florence K’s career took a new turn in 2003 when she and Pierre Deslauriers created Les Productions Red Blues, the label on which all of her albums were later released. Her first offering, Live au Lion d’or, a recording of a memorable concert she gave in 2004 at that well-known Montreal venue, came out in 2005. It was followed a year later with Bossa Blue, an album in the same musical style, that she also co-produced. Her trademark mixture of blues, bossa nova and jazz being a critical and popular hit, the 23-year-old artist won her first gold record (for 50,000 copies sold) and was invited to perform at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, where she was to return a year later for three sold-out concerts. In 2007, Florence K opened for the French cabaret singer Patrick Bruel and performed at the ADISQ Awards, where she pas presented with the Félix Award for World Music Album of the Year. Returning to Paris, where she was warmly received, she ended that banner year by performing in the opening show of Quebec City’s 400th birthday celebrations.

The year 2008 picked up where 2007 had left off: in a whirlwind of activity. Florence K charmed audiences around the world, including European shows with Isabelle Boulay and Bernard Lavilliers. She released La historia de Lola, a masterful album combining salsa, bossa nova and blues rhythms and containing a Cuban section that brought her a second ADISQ for World Music Album of the Year, and was certified gold.

The Lola Blue compilation, containing the highlights of Florence K’s two previous albums, was specifically designed to introduce the artist to the international market. Havana Angels, a holiday album recorded in Havana with young Cuban musicians, was released this past November. Co-produced with Osvaldo Montez, it is the last instalment in Florence K’s Havana trilogy, and contains revisited classic Christmas songs, original works by the artist, a musical duo with guitarist Jesse Cook, and a vocal encounter with the traditional Cuban ensemble Sintesis.
