How to obtain a license

Please consult our repertoire of members to verify that we represent the artist whose works you wish to use or contact us for assistance.

Processing Your Request

Please allow a minimum of five (5) business days for request processing and at least ten (10) business days if SOCAN is required to act as intermediary in obtaining consent for use from the artist or the right owner prior to the use being implemented. This can take the form of consent in principle (general idea or plan) or approval of a PDF layout provided by the individual or business looking to license the work.

License fees are applied based on a fee schedule that considers the type of use and which rights are being requested. We will inform you of the amount due along with the other conditions of use before issuing the license.

Cancellation Fee

If a requested license is cancelled after the licensing documents have been issued, an administrative fee of $50+tx for works by Canadian artists, or $100+tx for works from international, will be invoiced.

Photographic Material

Please note that SOCAN does not have the high resolution, digital files required for the reproduction of the works in its repertoire. You must contact the authorized sources to obtain the source material. For example, specialized image banks or museums which own the works. So in addition to licensing fees payable to SOCAN, photographic materials may have other associated fees payable to these image banks or museums in order to gain access to the source material.
