Montr\u00e9al, October 16, 2017 \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0The who\u2019s-who from Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s music ecosystem gathered to celebrate the careers and accomplishments of songwriters, screen composers and music publishers at the 28th Montr\u00e9al SOCAN Awards Gala at La TOHU., with nearly 50 awards presented during an emotionally and musically thrilling evening.<\/p>\n

For the first time in the gala\u2019s history, two special achievement awards were presented to one exceptional music creator, the legendary\u00a0Robert Charlebois<\/strong>, who received the SOCAN Lifetime Achievement Award for his truly remarkable career, as well as the SOCAN Cultural Impact Award, alongside his collaborator\u00a0Claude P\u00e9loquin<\/strong>, for their monumental song \u201cLindberg,<\/strong>\u201d performed in a wonderful rendition on the night by Canailles.<\/p>\n

Hosted by St\u00e9phane Archambault, the 400-strong guests saw\u00a0Luc Plamondon<\/strong>\u00a0present the SOCAN Special Achievement Award to\u00a0Monique Leyrac<\/strong>, for her incredible career as one of the greatest performers of her generation. Plamondon also broke his own record for SOCAN Classics (exceeding 25,000 radio spins in Qu\u00e9bec), taking his 35th and 36th awards for\u00a0\u201cLa L\u00e9gende de Jimmy\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cLa fille aux bas nylon.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rarely in the spotlight, yet a true master of pop music,\u00a0John Nathaniel<\/strong>\u00a0received the prestigious SOCAN Songwriter of the Year Award, and his song \u201c\u00c9clat<\/strong>,\u201d co-written with\u00a0Alexe Gaudreault<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Mariane Cossette-Bacon<\/strong>\u00a0won a Popular Music Award.<\/p>\n

The SOCAN Publisher of the Year award was presented to\u00a0\u00c9ditorial Avenue<\/strong>\u00a0and the company\u2019s founder,\u00a0Daniel Lafrance<\/strong>, saluting his leadership and massive contributions to the music community. The international success of screen composer\u00a0Cristobal Tapia de Veer<\/strong>\u00a0earned him the SOCAN International Achievement Award, marking the first time that a composer for film and television has been awarded the prize. Prolific screen composer\u00a0Michel Corriveau<\/strong>\u00a0was awarded the inaugural SOCAN Screen Composer of the Year prize for his work in sur\u00a0Les Pays d\u2019en haut<\/em>\u00a0(SRC),\u00a0Pr\u00e9monitions<\/em>\u00a0(AddikTV),\u00a0Versailles<\/em>\u00a0(Canal+), and the feature film\u00a0Anna<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSOCAN members provide the soundtrack to our lives and important fuel to our economy, so it is integral to celebrate and honour songwriters, screen composers and music publishers,\u201d said SOCAN\u2019s CEO,\u00a0Eric Baptiste<\/strong>. \u201cQu\u00e9bec\u2019s musical ecosystem is moving to a new era, and SOCAN is proactive on all fronts, working closely with organizations of every size to ensure that music creators and publishers are compensated fairly in this new environment. Tonight, we celebrate the very reason why we do everything we do for our members: their creativity, their emotion, their sweat, their intelligence, and their art.\u201d<\/p>\n

MIND-BLOWING PERFORMANCES<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Montr\u00e9al SOCAN Awards Gala was rich with live performances, creating numerous life-memories, including a medley of Robert Charlebois\u2019s biggest hits presented by\u00a0Daniel Boucher<\/strong>,\u00a0\u00c9mile Bilodeau<\/strong>,\u00a0Diane Tell<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0J\u00e9r\u00f4me Charlebois<\/strong>, just before\u00a0Louise Forestier<\/strong>\u00a0handed Charlebois his SOCAN Lifetime Achievement Award.<\/p>\n

Claude Dubois, whose songs \u201cSi Dieu existe<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cJ\u2019ai souvenir encore<\/strong>\u201d are revered SOCAN Classics, was moved by\u00a0Ariane Brunet<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Alexandre Poulin<\/strong>\u2018s delicate rendition of \u201cJ\u2019ai souvenir encore.\u201d<\/p>\n

The SOCAN Global Inspiration Award was presented to the late towering legend of song,\u00a0Leonard Cohen,<\/strong>\u00a0and accompanied by a deeply moving trilingual \u2013 French, English and Innu \u2013 rendition of his immortal song \u201cEverybody Knows<\/strong>\u201d by Beyries, Vincent Valli\u00e8res, and Matiu.<\/p>\n

The virtuoso pianist\u00a0Jean-Michel Blais<\/strong>\u00a0wowed the audience with his creative technique that helped him to earn the prestigious SOCAN Hagood Hardy Award, celebrating instrumental music.<\/p>\n

SOCAN CLASSICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The power trio of\u00a0Andr\u00e9anne A. Malette<\/strong>,\u00a0Stephane Moraille<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Genevi\u00e8ve Leclerc<\/strong>\u00a0paid homage to newly-minted SOCAN Classics, including \u201cLa L\u00e9gende de Jimmy<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cAnimal<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cCash City<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cCloser Together<\/strong>.\u201d The Box\u2019s Jean-Marc Pisapia could not resist jumping on stage to sing his band\u2019s hit during the gala\u2019s high-energy closing number. In all, 11 new songs were inducted as SOCAN Classics. (See attached list)<\/p>\n

POPULAR MUSIC AND SCREEN COMPOSITIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ten Francophone Pop Music Awards were handed out during the gala to the songwriters and music publishers of the most played songs in Qu\u00e9bec in 2016, including \u201c33 Tours<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cPolaroid<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cBelle infirmi\u00e8re<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cKarim et le loup<\/strong>,\u201d and \u201cMiami<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The gala also saluted the exceptional contributions to the industry and overall economy of screen composers and their publishers. Among the evening\u2019s winners were\u00a0Jean-Phi Goncalves<\/strong>\u00a0and his publisher\u00a0\u00c9ditions TM<\/strong>\u00a0who won the Domestic TV Music Award \u2013 Non-fiction for \u201cLe Tricheur<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0Anthony Rozankovic<\/strong>\u00a0and his publisher\u00a0Cin\u00e9flix M\u00e9dia Inc.<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Ole Media Management LP<\/strong>\u00a0walked away with two trophies for their work on the series \u201cMayday<\/strong>.\u201d Finally,\u00a0James Gelfand<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Louise Tremblay<\/strong>, as well as\u00a0Les \u00c9ditions de Musique JB<\/strong>\u00a0received the Feature Film Award for their work on Michel Poulette\u2019s \u201cSwept Under<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

SOCAN LICENSED TO PLAY AWARD<\/strong><\/p>\n

The essential contributions of music-using organizations in Qu\u00e9bec were represented with the SOCAN Licensed To Play Award being presented to\u00a0minist\u00e8re de l\u2019\u00c9ducation et de l\u2019Enseignement sup\u00e9rieur<\/strong>. The Quebec ministry of education was recognized for its ongoing commitment to ensuring that legal and ethical music licensing obligations are being met through its constituents across the province.<\/p>\n
