Tanya Davis video goes viral on YouTube
![]() |
A captivating, low-key video for singer-songwriter and SOCAN member Tanya Davis' poem "How to Be Alone" has become a sensation on YouTube, garnering more than a million views on the video-sharing website. So far, the video has been listed as one of CBS News’ top five viral videos of the week; tweeted about by noted film critic Roger Ebert; and screened at various high-profile film festivals.
The spoken-word piece, accompanied by Davis' gentle music, images of her solo adventures, and various superimposed animations, explores the many definitions and characteristics of being “alone,” and how solitude doesn't necessarily equate to loneliness. Davis points out that it's quite possible to appreciate, and even relish, being by oneself, without falling prey to the associated stigma. She encourages viewers to travel beyond commonly accepted "loner" locations, like a coffee shop or library, and go out to dinner and movies on their own. “You’ll find it's fine to be alone, once you’re embracing it,” says Davis in the video.
Shot in Halifax, where Davis lives, the four-minute video was commissioned by Bravo!FACT and directed by award-winning indie filmmaker Andrea Dorfman. You can see it here.
