Corporate Social Responsibility

A common thread weaves through SOCAN: every employee loves music and believes in the rights and fair compensation of music creators and publishers. This attitude is prevalent in everything we do and heavily influences SOCAN’s company culture. We take great pride in and are committed to being socially, environmentally, and economically conscious, while promoting the cultural diversity of our more than 300 employees in North America.SOCAN focuses on three main areas of corporate social responsibly:

- People & Culture
- Community & Charity
- Environment

People & Culture

Certified in 2016 as one of the best workplaces in the country by Great Place to Work Canada®, SOCAN creates an environment where employees can excel, with opportunities to achieve career goals, while realizing the organization’s vision. It's a company culture that encourages partnership, excellence, respect, leadership, and empowerment through our work environment, training & development, employee engagement, competitive compensation & benefits, mental health and wellness programs and facilities, social activities, and corporate social responsibility.

Employee Diversity

Our workplace boasts cultural backgrounds as diverse as Canada itself. SOCAN's members represent a similar diversity, with every genre and ethnic style of music created. The business that we license to play music are as varied as any on earth. We welcome, respect, and value different ideas and experiences, cultures, ethnicities, religions, and physical abilities. Diversity is key to SOCAN’s success and growth, and we nurture a culture of inclusion that is positive, while upholding policies that respect diversity and accessibility in everything we do and in the business decisions that we make.

“We are immensely proud of the programs and initiatives that we have put in place for our employees. While many of these require hard work and considerable funding, the results come out in productivity, improved efficiency and a more solid bottom-line.” – Mike King, Human Resources

Spreading music for a good cause.

Music creators and industry professionals fall through hard times, just like all of us. The SOCAN Store is just one of the ways that we continue to support music creators, with all profits from "Music ♥'s Everybody" merchandise benefitting the Unison Benevolent Fund, a non-profit, registered charity that provides counselling and emergency relief services to the Canadian music community. Anyone can spread music for a good cause by visiting the SOCAN Store.

“SOCAN is giving us backing off their shirts, and contributing all proceeds from sales of their cool merchandise to Unison means that more musicians who might be struggling with health or financial needs will be able to get by."
- Sheila Hamilton, Executive Director of Unison Benevolent Fund

Community & Charity

GIVING BACK is what we do.
There’s more to SOCAN culture than just loving music. We're also proud to support and give back to the communities in which we operate. Our employees demonstrate that they care by giving back, and their generosity has cared for so many.

“It’s SOCAN's responsibility to be socially conscious and socially active. We always need to think about those in our community who might need help. I’m sure we all can remember a time when we’ve had to reach out for help, and perhaps this is our way of paying it forward.” – Eric Baptiste, CEO of SOCAN
